How to Use Your Fan in Winter
So, you know how to use your fan in summer, but did you know that you can still utlilise the benefits of a fan in winter. Whilst there is not as much of a need for a fan, its use can still be beneficial to you in the cooler months. Here’s how we at Big Ass Fans recommend you use your fan in winter.
Reduce the Speed
One of the simplest ways to use your fan in winter is to reduce the speed at which it is set. Whilst our summers can be hot, we are lucky in that our winters are not as extreme as those of countries like Alaska or Switzerland. The need for a fan during winter is there, just not to the same capacity.
We find that in winter, the air quality of indoor spaces can become poor. As it becomes colder, people put their fans off entirely, meaning there is next to no air movement. Poor air quality can have major effects on workers, such as headaches, fatigue and an overall higher chance of getting sick. This then flows on to them needing days off and being less productive.
This is why we suggest reducing the speed of your fan, rather than turning it off entirely. Big Ass Fans come with a multi speed control, where the speed can be reduced further than many of our competitors. This will ensure fresh air is constantly being circulated throughout your workspace, without feeling the cold breeze. Reducing the speed of your fan will also mean a huge reduction in your energy bill over the cooler month.
Destratification
Another way to use your fan is to combine it with a heating system, to circulate warm air through your space. We all know that warm air rises, which means in many cases where heating is involved, the heat will rise to the roof and get trapped.
A solution to this, is to have your fan running at a low speed, where it can slowly push the warm air from the ceiling down to your workers on the ground; without creating a draft. This will result in a more even temperature throughout the space and will also reduce the pressure on your potential heating system, saving you money on your energy bill.
Again, because temperatures in Australia don't drastically change, the HVAC system would only need to be increased slightly. Used in conjunction with your HVLS fan at a low speed, you will create a warmer working environment in the cooler months.
A HVLS fan is an investment, and it would be crazy if it was only of use for a certain period of time. Big Ass Fans are an investment you can use 365 days of the year.
