Brisbane Bayside State College (BBSC) resides in the bayside area, which can often be incredibly hot and humid during the summer months. BBSC have historically struggled with keeping their Multi-Purpose Hall cool and comfortable for students and staff, particularly during exams, sporting events and assemblies.
The Problem
With school numbers sitting at over 1,000 children, and over 300 students per day using the sports hall, BBSC needed a solution that was quiet enough to not disturb the activities below, but effective in moving large amounts of air in the space.
Most of the funds behind these initiatives for BBSC were reliant on the fundraising efforts of the P&F. Therefore, it was vital that the BBSC P&F committee found a cooling solution that they could verify worked and was able to cool a large space at the fraction of the cooling costs attributed to air-conditioning.
President of the P&F, Gretchen Mander Jones reached out to a number of other schools in the area and discovered that Big Ass Fans are installed in over 1,200 schools across Australia. With confirmation of Big Ass Fans success in a number of schools, Gretchen reached out to Big Ass Fans.

How BBSC Created a cooling breeze
Due to the large nature of the multi-purpose hall, and to ensure even distribution of wall-to=wall airflow, Big Ass Fans used their certified Perlin Brackets to symmetrically position two Powerfoil X3.0 fans across the space. The robust nature of Powerfoil X3.0 also gives BBSC pease of mind that any sport activities i.e. balls hitting the fans will not affect the fans and their performance.
As the fans are high volume, low speed, BBSC were also able to use the fans at 60% capacity and still feel a cooling breeze below. This means when they are conducting exams or assemblies, the gentle breeze does not move papers or disrupt activities below with noise.
