What Summer Feels Like with Lockyer Architects

We recently sat down with Shaun Lockyer of Lockyer Architects and asked him one simple question: “What does summer feel like with Shaun Lockyer”.

His answer: a seamless indoor / outdoor experience.

Lockyer believes that exceptional architecture should extend beyond the immediate needs of a single homeowner and strive for long-term sustainability, accommodating multi-generational living. To achieve this, he emphasises the importance of designs that are flexible, durable, universally appealing, and adaptable. Personalizing a home goes beyond architectural decisions; it involves the thoughtful integration of interior decor, landscaping, and art to achieve a harmonious balance between the interior and exterior realms.

A key aspect of Lockyer's approach to sustainability is the use of timeless, robust designs, with a focus on materials such as concrete and timber, along with the integration of biophilic design. By leveraging these elements, he emphasizes the crucial design factors of light, air, flow, and flexibility. Lockyer believes that when these elements are properly employed, people tend to develop a deep affection for their homes, even as the functions of different rooms evolve over time and during seasons.

“If you use these elements right, people tend to love the homes they are in and want to spend time in them, even if the function of certain rooms evolve over time” - Shaun Lockyer, Lockyer Architects.

One exemplary project, Annie House, showcases the power of well-executed flow, air, and light, resulting in a seamless indoor/outdoor experience. In addition to these design principles, Lockyer Architects incorporated Haiku I ceiling fans by Big Ass Fans to enhance movement and invite occupants into each space. The home avoids fleeting trends and instead focuses on creating a timeless appeal that will endure each season.

The use of board-form concrete in Annie House goes beyond mere walls and extends to the roof and ceiling, representing an idea that is both timeless and contemporary. This choice not only provides a sense of coolness and freshness but also transcends throughout the entire space during humid summer months. Lockyer's integration of greenery onto the building itself, a recurring theme in his work, reflects the importance of biophilic design. This intentional connection to nature contributes to everyday health and well-being, fostering a deeper connection with the natural world while aiding in ventilation alongside the ceiling fans.

Shaun Lockyer's architectural vision encompasses the ideals of sustainability, timeless design, and the integration of nature into our built environments. By prioritizing the seamless blending of indoor and outdoor spaces, utilizing durable materials, and embracing biophilic design principles, Lockyer Architects creates homes that stand the test of time while nurturing the well-being of their occupants.
