The Anatomy of a HVLS Fan

Written by Big Ass Fans | Mar 10, 2023 2:13:14 AM

Much like the anatomy of the human body - there is a structure for how everything is made to work together for optimal function. While we know our product back to front, we wanted to take a deeper look at the anatomy of a HVLS fan, more specifically what makes our fans the best in the biz.

What is a HVLS fan?

High Volume, Low Speed fans (HVLS), are designed specifically to move large volumes of air at a low speed. Measuring up to 7.3 meters, HVLS fans rely on their size over speed, to produce efficient airflow. The air moves in a circular motion; moving toward the ground and horizontally until it hits a wall, at which point it moves upward. This continuous rotation can give a perceived cooling effect of up to 6 degrees. Originally designed for large spaces such as warehouses and distribution centers, our HVLS fans use modern technology and are now suited for a wider variety of spaces such as commercial, sports facilities and larger retail.

Check out the major components that come together to make a world-class HVLS fan.

Motor

Our fans come equipped with a 1.5 to 2.5 horsepower motor that powers the fan. We offer two motor types, to ensure we can cater to any problem. The Big Ass Fans direct-drive motor uses Neodymium Magnets to create an almost silent and maintenance-free product. Our C-face motors are built to withstand some of the harshest environments, and to maintain efficiency in the workplace, can be repaired quickly from the ceiling. And because we believe in our product, we insure our fans for 15 years when installed through our certified installer network.

Blades

Our HVLS fans come with 6 - 8 blades, depending on their model. These lightweight blades are designed to move large amounts of air at a lower speed. The composition of materials such as aluminium, allow less stress on the motor and provide more seamless airflow in your space. Our unique aerodynamic and cuffed winglet design enhances both energy efficiency and airflow by eliminating vortex formation and reducing the amount of wind noise.

Mounting system

The mounting system provides support for the weight of the fan and varies depending on the location in which the fan is being installed. We offer a range of mounting solutions to suit any facility layout. Suspended ceilings and open truss systems are no issue for us.

Control system

Seeing as HVLS fans are installed out of direct reach, they require an effective control system to operate from the ground. Our BAF-con system creates seamless communication between those on the ground and the fan. From manual dial changes, to integrated SmartSense technology, our BAF-con system operates 24/7 to match season conditions for maximum energy saving and constant comfort. Our system can be integrated with lighting and can operate up to 24 fans at any given time.

Safety features

At Big Ass Fans - Safety comes 1st, 2nd and 3rd; which is why we have systems in place for almost every possible scenario. The Airfoil Restraint System ensures that our airfoils stay intact in the event of any damage done to the fan. All our fans are installed with durable, double-stitched nylon straps, which extend from the hub plate through to each winglet. All Big Ass Fans come fully equipped to withstand wet and dusty conditions that often occur in industrial environments. Our fans come with an IP56 or IP55 protection rating, which is one of the highest ratings in the industry.

The combination of each component of our HVLS fans ensures that we can confidently provide you with a solution. Each component caters to a specific need and when put together, they form what we proudly know as the best and most efficient fans in the world!
