How to Keep your Workplace Cool and Avoid Heat Stress

Does your workplace feel too hot during Singapore’s warm weather? This can not only make it challenging for you to be productive, but can also lead to health issues like heat stress.

Heat stress occurs when your body finds it difficult to control its internal temperature. It can start from something mild like feeling thirsty, weak or tired. Then, if you don’t take it seriously and try to cool down, it can lead to heat stroke, cramps, or exhaustion.

If your work involves strenuous activities or working outside in the Singapore sunshine, then you could be more at risk of getting heat stress. It can also be an issue for those who work in hot indoor environments like kitchens, cafes, mines, warehouses, boiler rooms and so on. In these indoor locations, the risks are higher if the space has poor ventilation or insulation, or lacks air conditioning.

What can you do to prevent heat stress in your workplace? There are a few simple strategies you can follow to reduce risks for your employees and better manage the temperature of your space.

8 Ways to Prevent Heat Stress in The Workplace

1. Educate your Team

The first step is to ensure your team is aware of the risks of heat stress. Make sure to provide education and training programs and ensure they understand the symptoms to watch for. This is also a good time to update your workplace safety procedures and decide how long they can work in hot conditions.

2. Reduce Exposure to Hot Environments

Strategically planning your work schedule around the weather can help reduce heat exposure. For example, during hot and humid weather in Singapore, plan your most strenuous tasks for later in the day when the weather is cooler.

3. Allow Staff to Acclimatise

When your staff are working in hot conditions, allow them to gradually adjust. Increase their exposure and workload over time so they can acclimatise. Also take note of which workers are fit to work in hot conditions, remembering that factors like age, fitness and medical conditions can influence their sensitivity to heat.

4. Increase Air Circulation

Increasing air circulation is important for cooling your space and reducing the risks of heat stress. For example, if you have a large warehouse, factory or facility, you could install an industrial ceiling fan like our Powerfoil x4.0 to improve overall airflow. If you need more targeted airflow, you could try our portable directional fans like our Sidekick or Black Jack

For outdoor spaces, you could try our evaporative coolers like our Cool Space 300. Another option is to install physical structures like walls, awnings or shelters to create shade.

5. Prevent Dehydration

Keeping your workers hydrated will go a long way towards reducing the effects of heat exposure. Make sure to provide cool water and encourage workers to drink every fifteen to twenty minutes, whether they feel thirsty or not. It’s also a good idea to avoid caffeine and alcohol.

6. Allow Frequent Rest Breaks

Another way to reduce the impacts of a hot working environment is to allow your workers to take frequent breaks. On the hottest days during summer, allow breaks every hour. Provide access to cool areas with shade or air conditioning where your staff can relax.

7. Provide Cooler Clothing

Another consideration is your worker’s clothing. If possible, ensure your outdoor workers wear light, loose fitting clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen. Keep in mind that protective clothing may be hotter to wear, so provide more breaks for those workers.

8. Monitor your Team’s Health

Finally, make sure to keep track of the health and wellbeing of your team. In particular, pay attention to those most at risk of heat stress due to their job or because of pre-existing health conditions.

Final Thoughts

Providing a comfortable workplace for your team is important for keeping them healthy and enabling them to work effectively. If your workplace is too hot, try the above strategies to improve airflow and keep things cool.
